Afraid of the Dark</b>

Darkness gathers;
swirling, whirling, maelstrom
of fear.
Of nothing.
(nothing to fear but fear itself)
Inky void that calls;
all light is swallowed
deep into the gullet of the beast.

Velvet darkness all around, surrounds
so tight as to catch your breath.
And hold it.
It can hear you when you breathe,
this monster in the dark,
wide-eyed; no sobs; no whispers;
no “tink” as your tear drop hits the floor.

Shiver naked, clothed in shadows;
strangled clasp of dread around your throat.
Silent screams escape, but not a sound-
for it will hear you,
this nothing in the dark;
your greatest fear
of nothing
being hidden
in the light.
